Arad escaped on foot through the snowy mountains between Iran and Turkey, but without a passport was arrested and imprisoned for six months when he arrived in Turkey. “During this time, Turkey was getting ready to deport me back to Iran where I would have been hanged for being a military deserter.” In prison, Arad met more Iranians trying to escape who told him about the UN Refugee Program.
